Chemistry at Work

A group of Year 8 and 9 students spent Monday 27th January at the National Space Centre for a ‘Chemistry at Work’ event.

Students attended different workshops to find out how chemistry is involved in everyday life and play an important role in lots of industries, including the space industry.

During the work-shops students experienced some exciting demonstrations, investigating the power of rocket fuel as well as looking at what goes into paints and using chemistry to understand the potential interaction between the raw materials used.

Finally, students investigated ‘comet chemistry’ looking at what comets are, where they come from as well as looking at the complexity of our universe and its formation. They finished the day by doing a  star themed spectroscopy experiment.
